sunderlandSUNDERLAND and North Durham Finswimming Club sent three competitors to the BFA Short Course Championships at Edenbridge.

John Lavender was joined by mother and daughter Margareta and Sofija Berezevskaja, who hail originally from Estonia.

Margareta is a finswimmer who also does underwater orienteering, and whose two sons also compete – they are resident in Estonia.

For Sofija, aged 10, it was her first taste of major competion.

Lavender and Margareta both swam three events.

Sofija tok part in two programmed events and was then drafted into a mixed relay team who were short of a member.

She produced three fine swims – her 100m surface was particularly good, where she swam 0:58.23 and gained a podium place in the overall ranking.

Sofija’s first competition was a big event for her and she responded in fine style, beating a veteran in the 50 surface by nearly three seconds.

She was keen to swim more events than she had entered, and received her chance when a relay team was short of a swimmer.

She responded by swimming a good leg in 0:42.40.

Lavender had been training regularly with Gateshead and Whickham Amateur Swimming Club’s masters group at their Blaydon and Dunston sessions regularly in the run-up to the competition.

That work paid off with a good 50m surface time in stereofins – 0:37.73 – about 3-4 seconds faster than in training.

However, his best swim came in the 50 Apnea, where his previous competition personal best time was blown away by more than 2.5 secs to go sub-15 seconds for the first time.

His 0:16.41 was also a personal best for the 25m surface event.

Sofija also swam as part of a mixed relay team in the 4 x 50m relay event and completed her leg in 0:42.40.

Final club points positions were: 1 Kent Juniors 148; 2 Finworld London 122; 3 Crawley Town 99; 4 Swansea University 74; 5 FOG Hoppers 59; 6= SaND Finswimmers and SwanSea Dragons 4. 8 Hampshire Spitfires 4.
