Waterlife Club, Finswimming in Sardinia

FINSWIMMER MAGAZINE
Water Life Finswimming Cagliari

🇬🇧 In the most beautiful island of western Mediterranean Sea, where the water is clear and fresh and the Sun is the boss, a Finswimming Club is rising. We are talking about Sardinia, in the city of Cagliari, and the A.S.D. WATER LIFE captained by Mattia Murtas, former classical swimmer who saw in the monofin a beautiful and fascinating new world.

Mattia met this sport some years ago while he saw this incredible tool during a swimming session somewhere, and fell in love with it. So he decided that it would be his own future. Withing his already present Swimming Club, he started this Finswimming project with 4 coaches and a dozen of senior athletes, 6 veterans and 3 coaches. Before the Pandemic, there were also 15 baby finswimmers.

They took part to some Finswimming events pre-COVID, such as the Copa da Nadal in Switzerland (Tenero), in Modena at the Ghirlandina Finswimming Trophy, and in San Marino for the Italian Championships.

We asked him something about the spreading of Finswimming in Sardinia and Mattia feels so excited about it. ome Finswimming competitions are in program to be held in South Sardinia for sure, both in the Sea and in Swimming Pools, it will depend on how this pandemic matter will develop. We have to say that in the past, while Finswimming with monofin was a baby born, a lot of competitions were organized in this incredible island, like long distance races in the sea or crossing between little islands, using fiberglass bifins (but we are talking about prehistory) and monofin.

Gian Mario Migliaccio was a national-level finswimmer in the past. We had an interesting interview with him more than 10 years ago.

But certainly Mattia is not satisfied, his aim is to enlarge his team and to spread Finswimming throughout the island.

Finswimming is a valid alternative to the classical swimming that sometimes can be too challenging in terms of spent time, and it also is close to our cousin sport Apnea and Freediving.

Water Life Finswimming Cagliari
